Should: not only be animals you feed once, so they duplicate so you kill and eat them. They should have more mechanics, feeding/drinking, encouraging building more elaborate farms, animals should be of different types(aquatic), and values(Some cows provide more meat, some more milk). Some animals should be rare and ‘collectible’, to encourage zoos. Animals could have expanded utility(transport, carry) however this utility should come at the cost of the risk of losing them.

Should: connect the primary gameplay loops, should encourage a creative and fun way to use animals and farmables. Should be balanced, varied, tie into different mechanics like villagers and seasons, seasons should motivate using different crops. Should offer a certain degree of complexity, to be rewarding and provide a certain level of ‘coziness’.
